The team of the MetPhil project (Croatian Science Foundation IP-2022-10-2550) organized a visiting lecture by Prof. Antonio Capuano (Auburn University, USA) that was held on the 21.11.2024. The title of the lecture was “Alien Structure and the Nature of Metaphysics”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Antonio Capuano is a senior lecturer at Auburn University, USA and his philosophical work focuses on two areas: the philosophy of language and mind, and the metaphysics of man and his place in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The topic of Capuano’s talk was Matti Eklund’s new book Alien Structure<\/em>. In short, Eklund raises in his book two central questions: (1) Can there be alien languages? and (2) Might reality have alien structure? Eklund believes that the answer to both questions is “yes”. Capuano, however, thinks that the notion of alien languages and the corresponding idea of alien metaphysics is impossible, maybe even incoherent.
