As part of the Metaphilosophy <\/em>project of the Croatian Science Foundation (IP-2022-2550) at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Philosophy, we had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Sam Coleman<\/strong> from the University of Hertfordshire<\/strong>, United Kingdom<\/strong> on Thursday 6.11.2025. and Friday 7.11.2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting Lecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday<\/strong>, 6.11.2025<\/strong>., Prof. Coleman delivered a lecture titled
“Science Answers no Questions \u2013 Why Philosophy eats Science for Breakfast<\/strong>“,
which attracted graduate and PhD students and faculty members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the lecture, Prof. Coleman discussed the relationship between science and philosophy arguing that, while science provides the matter for our theories of the world, philosophy constitutes the form which enables us to answer specific scientific questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workshop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The following day, on Friday<\/strong>, 7.11.2025.<\/strong>, Prof. Coleman led a workshop titled
“Philosophy and Cognitive Science<\/strong>“,
in which he delivered a talk titled
“Another Kind of Overflow \u2013 The Two Visual Streams Hypothesis, Consciousness, and Qualitative Character<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this talk Prof. Coleman offered a novel explanation regarding the nature of the dorsal stream. He argues that the dorsal stream is unconscious, but has qualitative character, thereby preserving the link between consciousness and introspectability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the Research Group of the MetPhil project Boran Ber\u010di\u0107<\/strong> and Vito Balorda<\/strong> also presented their talks on the workshop. Boran Ber\u010di\u0107 delivered the talk titled “Behaviorism and Panpsychism<\/strong>” while Vito Balorda gave the talk “The Conceptual Mess in Neuroscience: What Counts as a Mechanism?<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants engaged in group discussions of the delivered talks. The workshop created a productive and collaborative environment, enabling attendees to explore the intersections between philosophy and cognitive science more deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These events were organized within the framework of the Metaphilosophy <\/em>project, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (IP-2022-2550)<\/em>. We extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Coleman for his contribution and to all participants for their engagement and insightful discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We look forward to future events and continued collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
